VARIETY: Concert Review: David Byrne Melds Sound, Vision and Movement at Los Angeles Stop

The polyrhythmic aspects clearly aren’t being decelerated when Byrne is adding bongos, timbales and gourds to the mix. But he doesn’t leave the pure rock elements of the show just to the white guys, either. He turned in a nutty guitar solo of his own midway through the Heads classic “Slippery People,” going heavy on the whammy bar. But he left the climactic solo, along with most of the other brief guitar breakouts of the evening, to Angie Swan, and seeing him cede his power at those moments to a black woman who shreds was a not inconsiderable thing.

Due to the untethered nature of the show, guitarist Angie Swan and keyboardist Karl Mansfield had particularly tough roles. They each had to provide a multitude of different sounds without the ability to have a pedal board in Swan’s case and a full rig of keyboards in Mansfield’s case. Angie’s playing was a revelation as she nailed iconic parts in such Talking Heads classics as “Once In A Lifetime,” “The Great Curve” and “Born Under Punches.”
